Solar Energy Breakthrough Could Reduce Need for Solar Farms

Source: University of Oxford

Scientists at Oxford University have developed a revolutionary approach to solar power generation. Instead of traditional silicon-based panels, they’ve created a thin, flexible material that can be coated onto everyday objects like cars, phones, and buildings. This new material, made from perovskite, is more efficient than traditional solar panels and can be applied to almost any surface, allowing for widespread solar power generation without the need for large-scale solar farms. This innovation has the potential to significantly reduce the cost and environmental impact of solar energy production.

Solar Energy Resource Availability under Extreme and Historical Wildfire Smoke Conditions

Authors: Kimberley A. Corwin, Jesse Burkhardt, Chelsea A. Corr, Paul W. Stackhouse Jr., Amit Munshi and Emily V. Fischer

Nat Commun 16, 245 (2025).https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-54163-8

A new study suggests that while wildfire smoke significantly impacts direct sunlight, its effect on the primary resource for most solar panels – global horizontal irradiance (GHI) – is limited at the national level. Even during severe fire seasons, the average reduction in GHI across the United States due to transported smoke is typically less than 5%. This finding implies that while local smoke events can significantly impact solar power generation, the overall impact of wildfire smoke on the nation’s solar energy potential may be less substantial than previously thought.
